what’s happening in the studio

well i finished off all 8 of the paper cuts i have been working on for the past two and a half weeks.  i am really pleased with how they look grouped together.  it was fun having a big project to work on, and quite easy to find myself working in the studio daily.

all lined up

the other thing i have accomplished is a finished first draft of my artist statement and a narrative for the grant i am applying for.  those were both really painful to work on.  it is hard to write about oneself and not make it sound like a fifth grade oratory report.  but both are done, or at least there is something to work from now, and off to friends for some editing and then back to me for revisions.  still i am quite happy with the progress.

i am going to start judging projects with the amount of audio books i have gone through to complete them.  this was a six book project.  to give you an idea of scale, each piece is 19″ x 19″ square.

in the evening i have also been obsessively knitting.  i taught myself how to knit lacy patterns.  they were much easier than i had thought they would be.  that gets me one step closer to the only goal i have set for myself for 2011, and that is to make a sweater.  here is the first lacy pattern i completed, the pattern is from ravelry.

i only had one skein of yarn, so it is a little on the short side, but i thought i might attach a couple buttons and figure out how to crochet some button loops.  after i finished this pattern i made a beret for myself that i was quite pleased with.  i thought the yarn was more purple than red but it changes in the light.

i have been wearing it all day inside because it has been quite cold, along with two sweaters and wool socks.

  1. Love your papercuts – they make craft look somewhat dangerous and exciting. I can emphathise with your difficulties on writing about you, what you do and how you do it. The beret and scarfette are supercute – I’m sure you could just chainstitch some loops – maybe go over the chain with a single crochet? Bound to be a tut out there somewhere 🙂

i find it surprising, but for some reason also adorable that for such an ambitious, creative and all around amazing person your only goal for 2011 is to make a sweater. now to me, this sounds like a huge and very difficult undertaking, but i have a feeling that you are going to be a pro. congratulations on all of the other things you have already accomplished less than one month in to 2011, even if they weren’t Official Goals.
